Health classes explained

Explanations of Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard classifications—what each represents and how insurers differentiate among them.

Insurance companies organize term coverage pricing by classification level. While terminology varies slightly between firms, the hierarchy remains: Preferred Plus (sometimes titled Super Preferred or Premium Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with table ratings layered above for elevated-risk applicants. Tobacco users occupy parallel groupings at elevated premiums.

What underwriters look at

Height-to-weight ratio, blood pressure and lipid levels, heart disease or cancer diagnosis before age 60 among blood relatives, traffic violations, medication history, job category, recreational pursuits, and current smoking or nicotine product use. Top-tier classification demands essentially clean marks across all categories; the Preferred rank permits modest deviations; Standard-Plus and Standard accommodate controlled disorders such as managed high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health assessment requires honest self-evaluation: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your estimate reflects that selection; underwriting by the carrier will verify the ultimate assignment. Uncertain? Pull quotes under two categories for comparison, then allow the formal review to decide. Inflating your health standing doesn't reduce premiums—only makes predictions less reliable.

Susman Insurance Agency specializes in matching you with insurers whose guidelines prove most favorable to your unique health profile—often a more valuable match than simply comparing advertised rates.
